Winter Dawn
Bred for a subtropical winter. It fruits very early, stays firm when fully ripe, and can be propagated on the farm — three things that matter more in an Indian winter than they do in California.

Where it came from
Winter Dawn was released by the University of Florida in 2005, from FL 93-103 as seed parent and FL 95-316 as pollen parent. It was bred explicitly for subtropical conditions similar to Dover, Florida — warm winters, high humidity, little chilling.
That breeding target is why it travels well to the Deccan. A cultivar developed for a cold-winter climate spends an Indian season waiting for chilling that never arrives.
How it behaves
Its defining trait is very early production: high November-to-February yields when planted in the last week of September or first week of October. It also produces relatively large fruit on comparatively small plants.
The fruit holds its condition unusually well. It stays firm even when allowed to colour fully, and it does not go over-dark at full ripeness — so you can leave fruit on the plant for flavour without losing the firmness that gets it to market.
It carries moderate resistance to Botrytis and anthracnose fruit rot, plus resistance to Colletotrichum crown rot. That last one has a commercial consequence: growers can propagate their own planting material rather than buying every runner in.
In the Indian belt
The low chill requirement is the headline for anyone on the plateau. Most European and Japanese varieties simply will not set fruit through an Indian winter, whatever else their catalogue promises.
The crown rot resistance is the quieter prize. Planting material is roughly half the cost of establishing an acre, so a cultivar you can multiply yourself changes the economics of the largest line in the budget — provided you refresh from certified stock often enough to keep virus load down.
